FEATURES ARE NOT VALUE\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLet's start with a simple example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImagine you're selling a luxury watch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou tell the client:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"This watch has a mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, automatic winding, a 40mm case and a power reserve of 70 hours.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose facts may be accurate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut you haven't necessarily created value.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou've provided information.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow imagine you say:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"You told me that you wanted something you could wear every day but also keep for years. INFORMATION IS NOT THE SAME AS VALUE\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the biggest mistakes in luxury sales is overwhelming the client with information.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMore information doesn't automatically mean more value.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA client doesn't necessarily need to know everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey need to know \u003cstrong\u003ewhat matters.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThink about your product knowledge as a toolbox.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou don't take every tool out and put it on the table.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou select the right tool for the job.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what a professional salesperson does.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eKnow everything you can.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eCommunicate what matters.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e3. PRICE IS NOT THE ENEMY\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the biggest mistakes I've seen in sales is becoming uncomfortable when the client asks about price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe salesperson suddenly starts apologizing for the price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey start discounting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey start defending.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey start talking too much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDon't.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrice is simply one part of the conversation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf the client asks:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\"How much is it?\"\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnswer clearly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDon't hide it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDon't be embarrassed by it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen explain the value when appropriate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor example:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"The price is $X. What you're getting at that level is the craftsmanship, materials, service, warranty and long-term ownership experience we discussed.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe important thing is that you should never try to manufacture value after the price has been challenged.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe value conversation should happen before the price becomes the only conversation.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e5. NEVER SAY \"IT'S EXPENSIVE\"\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBe careful with your own language.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you say:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Yes, it's expensive.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eyou have already framed the product negatively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInstead, stay factual.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"It is a significant investment.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOr:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"It's positioned at the premium end of the category.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen explain what differentiates it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe objective isn't to convince the client that an expensive product is cheap.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt isn't.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe objective is to explain what the client receives for the investment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e6. VALUE IS PERSONAL\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's something very important:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eVALUE IS NOT UNIVERSAL.\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat is valuable to one client may be irrelevant to another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThink about a luxury hotel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne guest may care about the view.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cares about privacy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cares about the spa.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cares about location.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cares about the concierge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cares about the bed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hotel doesn't necessarily need to sell every feature to every person.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt needs to understand what matters to the guest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe same principle applies to luxury retail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e7. STORY CREATES CONTEXT\u003c\/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuxury products often have a story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe brand may have a history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe designer may have a philosophy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe product may have been developed around a particular idea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe craftsmanship may involve techniques that have existed for generations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut here's the key:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eDon't tell the story just because you know it.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTell the story because it is relevant to the client.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf a client loves craftsmanship, talk about craftsmanship.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf they care about design, explain the design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf they care about heritage, tell the heritage story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf they care about innovation, explain the innovation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe story should serve the client.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003chr\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e10. You're looking for something that works when you travel, gives you the functionality you need outdoors, but still has a more understated look.
